We are seeking a candidate who aspires to move from their current role as a Senior Engineer or Tech Lead and who excels at delivering value in the form of daily product features as well as contributing to ongoing software operations and production support. They now want to have more of a say in the direction of system solution design with the outcome being delivery of a globally scalable, performant solution and gaining the experience of addressing the challenges that come with such an effort. The System Architect will spearhead the architectural evolution of ConnexPay’s CORE payments system, modernizing its existing monolithic architecture into a scalable, cloud-native solution in Azure. This hands-on role balances strategic leadership with targeted system improvements, requiring experience in application and database architecture, performance tuning, and monitoring within a .NET and Java environment. This is a hands-on role—ideal for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves to build pilot and proof-of-concept solutions, can clearly articulate the effort value and can work with engineering and product teams for final implementation.

Key Responsibilities

This is how you'll help us succeed

  • Design, present and implement scalable application and database architectures for the CORE payments system in Azure, optimizing for real-time processing, API performance and large-scale file consumption.
  • Provide hands-on, technical guidance across design, development, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Proactively identify and address challenges in mature systems, driving targeted improvements to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Optimize database design and performance to support efficient data handling and scalability for payment processing workloads.
  • Implement performance tuning and monitoring strategies for applications and databases, utilizing tools like Datadog or similar platforms to ensure system reliability.
  • Work hands-on with the Development and Product team, contributing to code, establishing DevOps best practices, and conducting code reviews to uphold architectural standards.
  • Lead problem-solving in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment to address scalability and operational challenges.
  • Build trust with business partners and customers through reliable, high-value technical solutions. 

Qualifications

Applicants for this role will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior role delivering efforts to improve cloud solution architecture. Experience as a technical lead is a plus.
  • Proven experience designing, delivering and scaling cloud-native enterprise application and database architectures in Azure, with expertise in .NET Framework/Core and/or Java/Spring framework. Candidates must have hands-on build and deployment experience with one of these framework technologies and their common supporting dependencies.
  • Experience in enterprise database architecture, design, and optimization, focusing on scalability and performance for high-volume transaction systems built on MSSQL and Postgres.
  • Hands-on experience with code-level contributions, DevOps best practices, and code reviews to maintain architectural standards. This is not just a thought leadership role.
  • Experience in large-scale file processing, system integration, and API development in enterprise cloud environments.
  • Thrives in fast-paced, flexible, problem-solving team environments, with a proven track record of delivering impactful solutions.
