The System Architect will spearhead the architectural evolution of ConnexPay’s CORE payments system, modernizing its existing monolithic architecture into a scalable, cloud-native solution in Azure. This hands-on role balances strategic leadership with targeted system improvements, requiring expertise in application and database architecture, performance tuning, and monitoring within a polyglot environment. The architect will partner with the Enterprise Architect, senior IT leadership, and the Development team to develop and execute a migration plan aligned with our established Architecture Strategy, fostering operational excellence and professional growth in a dynamic environment. This is a hands-on role—ideal for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves to build pilot and proof-of-concept solutions that can be handed off to engineering teams for full-scale implementation.

Key Responsibilities

This is how you'll help us succeed

  • Design and implement scalable application and database architectures for the CORE payments system in Azure, optimizing for real-time processing, API performance and large-scale file consumption.
  • Provide hands-on technical leadership across design, development, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Develop a migration plan to modernize the existing, monolithic architecture into a discreet, cloud-native framework, balancing cost and effort. 
  • Proactively identify and address challenges in mature systems, driving targeted improvements to enhance performance and reliability.
  • Optimize database design and performance to support efficient data handling and scalability for payment processing workloads.
  • Implement performance tuning and monitoring strategies for applications and databases, utilizing tools like Datadog or similar platforms to ensure system reliability.
  • Drive the adoption of true CI/CD practices, including designing workflows, structuring endpoints, and organizing projects to support seamless delivery.
  • Partner with the Enterprise Architect and senior IT leadership to align migration plans with the company’s Architecture Strategy.
  • Work hands-on with the Development team, contributing to code, establishing DevOps best practices, and conducting code reviews to uphold architectural standards.
  • Integrate diverse code bases into cohesive Azure-based solutions, ensuring stability and performance.
  • Lead problem-solving in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment to address scalability and operational challenges.
  • Build trust with business partners and customers through reliable, high-value technical solutions.

Qualifications

Applicants for this role will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 8+years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3 years in a senior or principal-level role focused on architecture and technical leadership.
  • Proven experience designing and scaling cloud-native application and database architectures in Azure, with expertise in polyglot environments (not all skills required).
  • Strong expertise in database architecture, design, and optimization, focusing on scalability and performance for high-volume transaction systems.
  • Proficiency in performance tuning and monitoring for applications and databases, with experience in monitoring platforms (Datadog experience is a plus).
  • Experience supporting and enhancing mature systems, with a track record of addressing operational challenges and improving performance.
  • Hands-on experience with code-level contributions, DevOps best practices, and code reviews to maintain architectural standards.
  • Expertise in large-scale file processing, system integration, and API development in cloud environments.
  • Thrives in fast-paced, problem-solving team environments, with a proven track record of delivering impactful solutions.
  • Self-motivated with a passion for learning, flexibility, and growth in an evolving technical landscape.
  • Familiarity with Azure services (e.g., Azure Functions, Kubernetes, Blob Storage, Azure SQL) and modern development practices is a plus.
